TEMPORAL LOBE ASYMMETRY: A MORPHOMETRIC ANALYSIS

Abstract
Objective: An attempt was done to find out asymmetry of temporal lobe to advocate further consideration of "heschl gyrus and planum temporale in investigations of an anatomic basis for language or auditory functional asymmetries. Material and Method: In present study sample constituted 400 human brains. Out of which 200 were cadaveric and autopsied brains (100 males and 100 females) and 200 were MRI scans of brain (100 males and 100 females). The age group taken into consideration was of 2 to 80 years. The brain specimens as well as MRI scans were of people with no intracranial mass lesions, head injury or recorded brain pathology of temporal lobes of both cerebral hemispheres. Results: Temporal lobe asymmetry is seen and measurements are taken. Length of lateral sulcus is more in left than that of right temporal lobe of cerebral hemisphere in both (cadaveric +autopsy) brains and MRI brain scans. Whereas distance from posterior end of lateral sulcus to inferior margin of inferior temporal gyrus is more on left temporal lobe of cerebral hemisphere than right in (cadaveric +autopsied) brains and same distance is equal on both left and right cerebral hemisphere in MRI brain scans. In cadaveric and autopsy brain mean value of length of lateral sulcus of left temporal lobe is 7.80±0.63 and right temporal lobe is 7.67±0.72 and the difference is highly significant whereas in MRI brain scan mean value of left temporal lobe is 8.07±0.64 and right temporal lobe is 8.00±0.73 and the difference is significant. In cadaveric and autopsy brain, distance from lateral sulcus to inferior margin of temporal gyrus of temporal lobe (H) in left temporal lobe is 3.83±0.43 and right temporal lobe is 3.81±0.46 and the difference is not significant whereas in MRI brain scan H in left temporal lobe is 3.72±0.41 and right temporal lobe is 3.72±0.42 and difference is not significant. Conclusion: This study concludes, on the basis of the measurements made, that there are differences between the right and left temporal lobes. It is important to highlight here that the both cerebral hemisphere of the brain are not identical either from anatomical or functional point of view.
